New Construction Chemicals: How to Treat Dry Rot, Wet Rot & Woodworm

The items that comprise our collection of chemicals for construction purposes are relied upon by a wide and diverse array of professionals, who know that they can trust us to to supply products of superlative quality at the most competitive price. Our collection has recently been extended with the addition of the Timber Treatment Kit from leading brand Lignum by Wykamol. In this edition of the Twistfix blog, we showcase this kit and give a guide on how to use it for optimal results.

At the heart of the kit are six one-litre containers of Lignum Pro D156, which is a versatile wood preservative formula that incorporates both insecticidal and fungicidal components. Manufactured using state-of-the-art micro-emulsion technology, the particles that comprise the formula are of exceptionally-small size and are measured in nanometres.

This method of formulation permits the formula to penetrate deeply into timber pores, providing the most effective treatment of and protection against wood-rotting fungi (both wet and dry) along with the eradication of wood-boring insects (collectively referred to as 'woodworm').

In addition to the Lignum Pro formula, our comprehensive kit also contains a generously-sized mixing and storage tub as well as a high-quality professional spray unit complete with adjustable nozzle and brass lance.

How to Use the Lignum Pro Kit

  • The first step is to remedy the source of excess moisture that is affecting timber. Then, the area should be opened up to reveal as much timber surface as possible. This can include things like lifting floorboards, which will provide access to the lower and upper floor surfaces as well as any supporting joists.
  • Before application commences, ensure that you are wearing appropriate protective clothing and that the timber to be treated is entirely clean and free from any contaminants such as wood dust
  • The concentrated Lignum Pro formula should then be diluted appropriately in the provided container. For dry/wet rot treatment and the prevention of blue-staining fungi, 23 litres of clean water should be mixed with two litres of the formula. When eradicating woodworm, one litre of Lignum Pro should be diluted with 24 litres of water.
  • Though the product has no finish, having the same effect as the application of water or solvent. That said, testing on a small, inconspicuous area before commencing full application is recommended.
  • After decanting the diluted mixture into the spray unit, apply it to all accessible timber surfaces. For awkward areas, the formula can be applied using a brush. The coverage rate for dry rot, wet rot and blue-stain fungi is one litre of formula to each five square metres of surface.  For woodworm infestation treatment, the coverage rate is one litre of diluted formula to each 3.3 square metres of affected timber.
  • Immediately upon completion, the spray equipment should be fully rinsed. Any washings can be saved as diluents for future usage.

Depending on the timber and varying ambient conditions, the formula is usually touch-dry just a single hour after application. Within 24 hours, the treated timber can be stained, varnished or over-painted as required. It is important to note that unprotected people and animals should not go near the treated timber for a minimum of 48 hours after application.
