Damp Proof Cream Injection: Defeat Damp Decisively!

In the previous edition of the Twistfix blog, we revealed some of the most common causes of rising damp at the base of walls and the damage that can result. The primary cause is the ineffectiveness of a physical damp proof course which can occur for various reasons. One of the quickest, easiest and most effective ways to remedy rising damp caused in this way is to create a chemical damp proof course via the injection of damp proof cream (DPC), which is the focus of this article.

A common reason for the failure of a DPC is bridging, whereby moisture breaches the physical barrier and allows dampness to migrate above it. Any bridging material, such as internal plaster or debris within cavity walls, must first be removed before DPC damp proof treatment can commence; otherwise, the 'bridge' will remain, and the project is unlikely to succeed.

A Brief Guide to Using Damp Cure™

• Drill 12mm in diameter bores along the designated horizontal mortar beds and vertically at abutments following the zig-zag pattern of the mortar joints. The depth of each bore should be approximately 90% of the total thickness of the wall receiving the treatment. Start by forming the holes at each perp-end joint's base along the damp proof course line, then add additional holes to ensure horizontal centres do not exceed  120mm. 
• Using a caulking gun or hand pump, use the Damp Cure™ DPC to fill the bores from the back of each hole to within 10mm of the wall's face. 
• Make good the outer face of the wall using matching mortar, mastic or plugs. 

The curing process begins immediately though the final cure can take between two and six weeks, depending on the thickness of the  wall.
