British Made for the Building Trade
At 11pm on 31st January 2020, the UK formally withdrew from the European Union. Whatever your stance on the polarising issue of Brexit, one thing is certain: the need to protect the UK's economy and safeguard British jobs.
Along with the disruption predicted to international supply networks caused by the Coronavirus outbreak, it is now more important than ever for the construction industry to support UK manufacturers by Buying British.
UK designers have a global reputation for being among the most creative and innovative in the world. Buying British supports our own economy, encourages home-grown talent, helps the environmental effort and celebrates our own unique skills. Twistfix strongly and proudly supports UK manufacturers: the majority of our major building product ranges are all made right here in the UK and offer plenty of advantages:
- Protecting British jobs and creating more employment
- Maintaining British manufacturing skills
- British Standards are among the most stringent in the world. The British Kite Mark, first introduced over a century ago in 1903, is recognised globally as a symbol of superlative quality
- Ensuring continuity of supply as global sourcing networks are disrupted under the strain of the Coronavirus outbreak
-
Maintaining customer service and delivery times as international supply chains experience limitations in capacity and availability so that even when materials are available, they may be delayed by new customs and import procedures.
-
Improving cost-effectiveness and price stability: no tariffs to pay, reduced transport costs and immunity to fluctuations in currency exchange rates.
- Causing less negative impact on the environment by avoiding the high levels of carbon emissions that come from transporting goods by sea or air into the UK
The Construction Industry Briefing Paper produced in December last year for the house of Commons identified that:
- The construction sector contributes £117 billion to the UK economy; that is 6% of total economic output.
- There are 2.4 million jobs in the sector, 7% of UK total.
- There are 343,000 VAT registered construction businesses in the UK, 13% of the total. This figure does not include an unusually high number of ‘unregistered’ businesses which are typically self-employed contractors.
- The trade gap between total exports and total imports for construction products and materials, since February 2013, stands at a deficit of £6 billion.
- Cavity Drain Membranes, which are produced in Lancashire
- Helical Bars and Wall Ties, manufactured in the stainless-steel county of West Yorkshire
- Damp Proofing Cream and Coatings that are formulated in factories in the North of England
- Condensation Fans, designed and assembled in the principality of Wales
- Brick Repair Mortars, which are blended in the South West
- Basement Sump Chambers that are moulded near to London in the South East of the UK
