The Construction Industry Briefing Paper produced in December last year for the house of Commons identified that:

  • The construction sector contributes £117 billion to the UK economy; that is 6% of total economic output.
  • There are 2.4 million jobs in the sector, 7% of UK total.
  • There are 343,000 VAT registered construction businesses in the UK, 13% of the total.  This figure does not include an unusually high number of ‘unregistered’ businesses which are typically self-employed contractors.
  • The trade gap between total exports and total imports for construction products and materials, since February 2013, stands at a deficit of £6 billion.
